A little bit about us here at Rare Earth Designs...
Rare Earth Designs creates sacred art and tools from the Land Sanctuary of Karl Feret and Sarah Heartsong called Erosia. Erosia is 13 acres of Land situated at the base of the Olympic Peninsula in the rainy Pacific NW. Erosia will soon be a place where people can come to Land (with the capitalization denoting it's sacred) to camp and/or retreat. Erosia is organized as a Washington state religious nonprofit and is space to center in Nature with the possibility of creating Art and Tools with experts guiding/aiding in the process.
Rare Earth Design's current incarnation is a blending of the original spiritual woodwork business of Karl Feret with his partner Sarah Heartsong's art and services. Rare Earth was subsumed under the corporate umbrella of the company she's had since 2004, Heartsong Healing Arts, at the beginning of 2020 when they moved to the Land fulltime. Their partnership opened up an unique possibility to offer both sacred toolmaking and spiritual services, including the opportunity for others to manifest their Visioned Art/Tool with the support and guidance of professional priestly artisans who do this as their livelihoods.
So, who is Karl Feret? Well, Karl is originally from the Denver area, who moved to Washington state many years ago. Karl grew up working with woods, from building and repairing furniture with his father to the fabrication of custom homes. He was a stonemason and landscape designer by trade and a woodworker and metaphysical student/practitioner in everyday life. Eventually friends convinced Karl to share his skills beyond his personal circles so he started to sell his wares part time as a side hustle. He now works with the earth everyday, full time, both on physical and spiritual levels creating and designing sacred art and building our Land Sanctuary, Erosia.
Karl has more of a ceremonial, or "traditional" magic background than Sarah does. He was formally initiated into Wicca back when he lived in Denver. He continues to be drawn into esoteric western sources through rabbit holes now available all over online, learning all the time. Karl is an ordained priest and currently serves as the Speaker of the Land for the TOLIS, the naturecentric spiritual association Erosia is a part of.
Often when Karl researches the occult through ancient texts he finds obscure tools used by ceremonialists and mages. He recreates them and occasionally improves upon them. He's who designs and fabricates the boards, the runes, and the bigger boxes/cases. He turns the wands, pens, hair pins, wood "stones", and creates the TreeScents upon his lathe. Karl's always working on something new as his brain never stops creating!
Sarah is an ordained, nature-centered priestess who has served her communities in New Mexico and the Pacific NW spiritually both as a professional and volunteer all her life. Raised an active Methodist Christian, Sarah pivoted in 1992 when she had an epiphany about the plurality and genderfull Nature of the Divine. Sarah embraced Nature as the center of her Path then studied intensely to gain a BA degree in Religion specialized in comparative Religions and cultures around the globe. Especially interested in the spiritual traditions of indigenous peoples of the Earth with their Wisdom Ways, Sarah also holds a MA in Communication Studies with intercultural communication as her focus.
Sarah is also a talented artist. She has a strong sense of design and abilities passed down to her from both sides of her family. Most often it will be Sarah that you will talk to as she's currently working not only as an artisan and main Sanctuary priestess, but as the office manager. Sarah is the Lady of the Land of Erosia, a business woman, a coach, a reader, a healer, a ceremonialist and often a teacher. Sarah designs and makes primarily the altar boxes, altar icons and drums.
Caring for the Land and the Earth is important to us at Rare Earth Designs. In the production of our art we reuse old things whenever possible, such as upcycling old wooden bowls to use as our hoops for the drums. We locally source and buy our supplies from thrift stores as much as possible when creating our art. We use shellacs instead of petroleum based wood sealants and we make our own all-natural wood balm for polishing and sealing our wooden products.
This year we start 2022 again with a vision of adding a permanent shop building and camping spots to our 13 acres of wooded Land. Last year we had to halt plans when the price of lumber went through the roof making the funding harder. It seemed wiser to wait to see if prices fell. Hopefully we will build this year. We really want to make our own boxes in house and expand our ability to create larger items. That will free the yurt to become the indoor gathering and creating temple it's intended to be.
Here on this website you are welcome and Merry Met! Please explore what we have to offer. Perhaps you will find your next heirloom piece to pass down to your descendents. Maybe you will be moved to create a ceremony to mark a change in your life. Might you need a special incense, a new wand or divination tool to mark that occasion? Whatever brings you here you are welcome!
Please reach out if you are in need of a special tool, gift or a service we offer, and if you have any questions.
You can reach Sarah directly at firstname.lastname@example.org
The 30 ft yurt is our current temporary office and work space until we can get the permenant shop built.
